BOARD MEMBER COMPENSATION AND EXPENSES

The Avoyelles Parish School Board shall provide an expense allowance and provide for expense reimbursement for its members in accordance with state law.  School Board members shall also be authorized to receive reimbursement for actual travel and related expenses while on official School Board business, in accordance with School Board policy.

Any action increasing the compensation for School Board members shall require a two-thirds (⅔) vote of the total membership.  Each time state law dealing with the expense allowance of school board members is amended or before any action changing the amount of compensation is taken, however, the School Board shall advertise the time and place where the meeting is to be held to consider the expense allowance in the official journal of the School Board on at least two (2) separate days during the fifteen (15) days immediately preceding such meeting.

MEMBERS' ABSENCE AT MEETINGS

A School Board member shall be allowed to miss a combination of three (3) regularly scheduled monthly School Board meetings, monthly committee meetings, Special School Board meetings, and/or unexcused during a year of office with no penalty.  Any member exceeding three (3) unexcused absences shall, therefore, forfeit $100.00 per absence of any of the meetings.

Excused absences shall not count towards an accumulation of the allowable three (3) unexcused absences.

Reasons an absence will be excused includes:

• Death of immediate family member

• Hospitalization of the School Board member or an immediate family member

• Surgery of the School Board member or an immediate family member

• Official School Business

• Official Work Business

• Absences deemed to be excused absences by majority vote of the President, Vice- President, and Executive Committee Chairperson.

Immediate family includes spouse, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, sibling, father/mother-in-law, or a person domiciled with and being cared for by the School Board member.

In the event that a current member is replaced for the remainder of an unexpired term by an appointed or newly-elected member, this policy shall apply to the new member for the remainder of the unexpired term of office on a pro-rata basis.
