PROCEDURE FOR STUDENTS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF
SUSPECTED CONTROLLED DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES
If a student is found in possession of a suspected controlled dangerous substance (CDS) on Avoyelles Parish School Board property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored event, the following procedures shall apply:
Appropriate law enforcement agency shall be notified. They will be requested to expeditiously process the suspected CDS through the applicable criminalistics laboratory.
A timely due process hearing shall be scheduled by the school administration with the appropriate hearing officer immediately followed by all appropriate notices being given.
If the situation warrants, the student will be assigned to the Avoyelles Parish Alternative School (APAS) until the results of the criminalistics laboratory are received. If not, the student shall be returned to his/her home school.
If assigned to APAS, the student’s parent/legal guardian shall be required to provide transportation to and from APAS for the duration of the student’s stay there.
If the results from the criminalistics laboratory are negative, the student shall be immediately returned to his/her home school.
If the results from the criminalistics laboratory are positive, the student shall be expelled from all Avoyelles Parish public schools for the duration of time as outlined in state law.
