FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS

The Avoyelles Parish School Board recognizes the educational and cultural value of international exchange programs and students.  Only international exchange students from district-approved exchange programs shall be admitted, and the number approved shall not exceed 2% of the student population at any high school (based on the end-of-year count from the previous school year).

International exchange programs shall be approved by the district on an annual basis.  District approval must be obtained prior to seeking the admission of any international exchange student to a public school in Avoyelles Parish.  For the year of admittance, the sponsoring agency of any exchange student must be included in the list published by the Council for Standards on International Educational Travel and be approved by the United States Immigration Agency to qualify for F-1 or J-1 visas.  Students with F-1 visas shall be required to reimburse the Avoyelles Parish School Board for the full unsubsidized per capita cost of providing education for the entire period of their attendance.  The sponsoring agency must have a local representative who resides within fifty (50) miles from the host school and who is available to meet with school personnel, the student, and the host family.

The Superintendent will establish procedures and regulations for the administration of the foreign exchange student program to ensure that the acceptance and placement of international exchange students will be a beneficial experience for all involved.

Graduation from high school by a foreign exchange student shall be dependent upon proper transfer of credits and the student earning all Carnegie units required for graduation and all other requirements established by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).  Students not meeting these requirements shall not participate in graduation ceremonies.

SELECTION OF ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS

Applicants shall be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with the following considerations:

  1. Only original applications shall be accepted (no faxed or copied applications).

  2. All applications must be brought to the school by the host parent so that an address can be established and important information presented.

  3. Only complete applications will be accepted.  All sections of the application must be complete and included.

  4. Applications must be approved by the school administrator.

  5. Completed applications shall be accepted from March 1st through August 1st for a student to be eligible to attend school that year.  No student shall be allowed to enter at mid-term.
